THINK PINK

THINK PINK

Art

The pink flamingo piece THINK PINK by Turku-based visual artist Johanna Sinkkonen is returning to its birthplace at Ruisrock 2022. The large environmental art piece is made from materials such as chicken wire and safety fencing.

THINK PINK was inspired by the iconic plastic flamingo that has a long and colorful history in popular culture all the way from 1950s garden ornaments to casino hotels and 21st century swimming pool toys. Once synonymous with wealth and leisure, now a staple in the kitsch sections of cheap markets, the plastic flamingo has undergone a major cultural transformation. Yet flamingos still have an air of the exotic, fun and Miami. THINK PINK takes a piece of this esthetic and links it to questions about the challenges caused by climate change. Flamingos normally nest in colonies of thousands of pairs, but only if the water level is optimal.

Johanna Sinkkonen (b. 1983) is a multidisciplinary visual artist who combines methods of community, place-based and media art in her work.
