BÄMÄ is a group of female artists who got tired of the misogyny of Finnish rap and joined forces. The collective consists of eleven well-known female artists – Matriarkaatti, Helena Routa, Nelli Milan, satu, Aina, Malka, EME, Sorry Babe, Ida Alex and Emilia Ex. The debut single Kaiken takana on bämä, combining club music and Finnish rap songs that talk about social issues, was met with an excited welcome in April. Nelli Milan and Helena Routa point out that rappers have always made answer songs in response to each other – and now it’s time for women to do the same.
